Yale

As I was sitting in a meeting yesterday, I thought to myself, “why am I defensive about my intelligence and why do I always associate college with intelligence?” Here’s an example: I think to myself - “wow I’m such a sellout - I went to YALE,” but I’ll also think “I went to Yale and Mount Holyoke for G-d’s sake - I think I can faciliate a workshop.” I somehow seem to have conflated capability with educational attainment. I’ve also conflated values and education.

In this workshop that my educational background made me feel prepared for I talked about building capabilities (which is straight from A. Sen) and how we can trust women who, when given the opportunitiy, can build their own capabilities. If capability is about self-empowerment, then specific educational attainment isn’t all that important. I guess I have more respect, awe and appreciation for someone who’s been beaten and undervalued their whole life and who makes the active decision to build their capability and that of their family, friends and community.

Fuck a PhD - I care about capability
